DETALO INSTRUMENTS ApS was founded in 2017 after more than a decade of experience with haemoglobin mass and blood volume assessments in humans using various techniques. Prior to the launch of the OpCO numerous different prototypes had been constructed and tested but deemed unsatisfactory. Today the OpCO is the only CE approved device that can be used to determine haemoglobin mass in humans.

Preceding to the development of the OpCO we conducted scientific studies using manual methods. The main limitations associated with these methods is that the measurement outcome greatly dependends on the operator. The aim with the development of the OpCO was to reduce the likelihood for human errors by constructing a fully automated system which at the same time would allow for measurements of blood volumes with great precision and accuracy.

The OpCO has been applied to determine haemoglobin mass and blood volumes in chronic kidney disease, heart failure and insulin resistant individuals as well as in World Champion athletes and Olympic medalist of various sport disciplines. Studies using the OpCO report excellent typical measurement errors of between 1.0 to 1.35%. For further details see publications.

The OpCO provides full autonomy with regards to protocol use, and haemoglobin mass and blood volumes can be determined using the popular 2 and 10 minute versions alike, or with any other protocol of preference.
